Melkeproteinene består av to hovedgrupper, kaseiner og myseproteiner. Disse proteinene inneholder tilsammen alle de essensielle aminosyrene som vi trenger, det vil si aminosyrer som kroppen ikke kan lage selv, men må få tilført via mat og drikke.

Det har lenge vært kjent at myseproteiner gir økt stimulering av muskeldannelse kort tid etter trening.
